Beta Glucan

Beta Glucan is a naturally occurring polysaccharide (a type of sugar molecule) found in the cell walls of oats, barley, mushrooms, yeast, and certain bacteria. In skincare, it is valued for its powerful soothing, hydrating, and skin-repairing properties. Often compared to hyaluronic acid, Beta Glucan not only helps retain moisture but also offers antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, making it ideal for sensitive, dry, or compromised skin.

Due to its large molecular structure, Beta Glucan works primarily on the skin’s surface, creating a protective barrier that supports healing and reinforces the skin’s natural defences. It is commonly used in moisturisers, serums, barrier creams, and post-treatment products.

Benefits for Skin

  • Deeply hydrates the skin by forming a moisture-retaining film on the surface.
  • Reduces redness, irritation, and inflammation, making it suitable for sensitive or reactive skin.
  • Supports wound healing and skin recovery after treatments like peels, laser, or micro-needling.
  • Strengthens the skin barrier and improves resistance to environmental stressors.
  • Provides antioxidant protection by neutralising free radicals and reducing oxidative stress.
  • May help reduce the appearance of fine lines by improving skin elasticity and hydration levels.

Safety & Toxicology

  • Extremely well-tolerated by all skin types, including those with eczema, rosacea, or sensitised skin.
  • Non-comedogenic, non-irritating, and non-sensitising.
  • Can be used daily, and is often included in formulations designed for barrier repair and sensitive skin care.
  • Derived from natural sources, often labelled as oat beta glucan, yeast beta glucan, or mushroom beta glucan.
  • No known toxic or harmful effects when used in cosmetic formulations.
  • Safe for use on children and during pregnancy or breastfeeding when applied topically.
